When new mechanical equipment is proposed, it is becoming common practice for Local Authorities to require an acoustic survey to be carried out to establish the existing environmental noise levels.

In addition, the Local Authority would also require a Noise Impact Assessment to be produced to demonstrate that the existing environmental noise levels will not be increased by the proposed new mechanical equipment. This may require some noise reduction measures to ensure that the appropriate criteria are achieved.
